With so many different things to consider, picking out an extra-curricular activity with your child is a big decision. You want them to do something they will enjoy, in a place they feel comfortable, all while developing important skills and meeting other young people. With that in mind, if you child loves singing along to music, learning choreography or stepping into character; junior musical theatre classes are a perfect first step.
At Kelly Aykers Full Time Dance, we bring singing, dancing and acting together through our junior school and Junior Broadway companies in Brunswick. Our aim is to give young performers a supportive place to explore their creativity, build confidence and learn what it takes to put on a show. Here’s what parents should know before getting started.
What Do Junior Musical Theatre Classes in Melbourne Include?
Musical theatre brings several performance skills together. During our junior musical theatre classes, our students work on their singing, choreography and acting. Learning about characters and how to bring them to life on the stage. Each class ends up feeling like a mini-musical, combining different skills.
Our junior school page explains everything you need to know about the musical theatre class includes a half-hour group singing session, followed by choreography that also covers acting and character breakdown. For children who enjoy stories, music and movement, that mix offers plenty to get involved in. It also gives them a chance to try different parts of performance and discover which elements they enjoy most.
Our Junior Broadway companies take that combination further, with training in acting, singing and dancing under the guidance of directors, musical directors, choreographers and vocal coaches. Weekly rehearsals include work on choreography, and students have mid-year and end-of-year performance opportunities.
You can find more about our junior options on the Kelly Aykers Junior Dance School page.
Which Junior Musical Theatre Class Is Right for Your Child?
Age is a useful starting point when comparing classes. We have two Junior Broadway company options on our website:
- Junior Glee (ages 7–11): weekly sessions listed for Saturdays, 2:00–4:00 pm.
- Junior Broadway (ages 11–18): weekly sessions listed for Tuesdays, 4:30–7:30 pm.
These options are designed for different age groups, so check the details and talk with us about which option is the best fit. Timetables and places can change, so please confirm current session times and availability before making plans.
It’s also worth thinking about what your child wants from the experience. Are they excited by singing, keen to learn choreography, or happiest when they can act out a character? Musical theatre brings all three together, and our junior offerings are built around that mix.
Your child doesn’t need you to arrive with a complete plan for their future. Start with their interests, ask questions about the class, and let their enthusiasm help guide the decision. If they already attend another dance studio, our Junior Broadway companies are designed to be an option they can join without having to leave their current studio.
How Can Parents Help Their Child Get Started?
A good first step is to talk through what the class involves. Explain that students will be learning and rehearsing with others, and that performances are part of the experience. Some children are ready to jump straight in; others may want a little time to get comfortable with a new space and group. Either way, it helps to make room for questions and keep expectations realistic.
Before you enquire, consider a few practical details:
- Age group and schedule: Check which class aligns with your child’s age and your family’s weekly routine.
- Their interests: Share whether your child is most excited about singing, dancing, acting or all three.
- Previous experience: Let us know what they’ve tried so far, and ask us about any questions you have around class suitability.
